Israeli Prime Minister Approves Lebanon Ceasefire Deal ‘In Principle’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has approved a preliminary ceasefire deal with Hezbollah during a security consultation with Israeli officials on Sunday night, according to a source familiar with the discussions.

While the agreement is emerging, Israel still has concerns regarding specific details that are expected to be communicated to the Lebanese government on Monday. Ongoing negotiations indicate that the deal will not be finalized until all issues are addressed.

Additionally, any ceasefire agreement will require approval from the Israeli cabinet, a step that has yet to take place.

Sources involved in the negotiations have reported that discussions are progressing positively, but they also caution that continued exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah could jeopardize the talks if any missteps occur.

U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein, who visited Beirut last week, stated that a ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon is “within our grasp,” but emphasized that the final decision rests with the involved parties. He met with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, the key negotiator with Hezbollah, and noted that their discussions had been “constructive” and “very good” in narrowing the gaps between the parties.
